Commonly asked questions:

What is the Purpose of  a  Speech-Language Screening?
A speech-language screening consists of  an informal assessment of a child's articulation, fluency, voice, and language  skills to determine if there is a need for further evaluation. Your child may need a speech-language screening if you have concerns regarding the above mentioned areas or is not meeting age expected speech and language milestones.

Who Should be Screened?
Screenings for young children identify possible issues with a child’s pronunciation, her ability to communicate with adults or peers, her understanding and use of language, stuttering/fluency issues and  voice production and quality.  It is essential to  identify these potential problems early, as early intervention is the best start to improve school readiness. We conduct screenings for children under 5.

Why?
Screenings are important for early identification of possible speech and/or language delays and disorders. Children who have difficulties with language use or understanding often have a challenging time learning to communicate effectively, which leads to frustration, and sometimes aggression. Language impairments can also effect a child's ability to read, write and develop appropriate skills for academics. Speech production, or pronunciation errors could lead to frustration in communication due to being misunderstood. Voice disorders can often be overlooked in early childhood. The earlier the issue is detected, usually the easier it is to resolve. Fluency/stuttering can have negative effects to a child’s self esteem and social interaction, resulting in decreased participation in activities and at school.

A comprehensive evaluation is a crucial first step for your child.  The evaluation results help determine strengths and weaknesses in communication.  The evaluation usually takes about 1 1/2 - 2 hours.  Prior to the evaluation, a questionnaire needs to be filled out to obtain background information including social, birth, medical , developmental and social history.  Testing will be based on the concerns by the parents/referring physician and your child's age. Following the evaluation, the speech-language pathologist will discuss the findings and interpretations.
Speech therapy will follow the treatment plan created specifically for your child's needs.  Therapy sessions may focus on receptive language, expressive language, and speech production/articulation.  Our therapists work with the parents to provide an enriching experience for the children.
